Physician Leadership Academy (PLA) of South Florida

The PLA experience will help physicians who want to build and/or improve their leadership skills. Interactive classes will enable physicians to enhance organizational management skills, develop continuing relationships with colleagues and strengthen their leadership roles in the diverse communities of South Florida. The program will include seven sessions. Effective physician leadership continues to be critical as healthcare systems evolve. With attendance at all sessions, the Physician Leadership Academy will offer participants:

  • At least 40 AMA Category 1 CME credits (with full attendance)
  • A diverse array of leadership skills training
  • Vital information about health care issues
  • Access to a growing professional network


This program is held under the auspices of the Palm Beach County Medical Society/Services in partnership
with Broward County Medical Association and Dade County Medical Association. The program is funded through a grant from The Physicians Foundation and is endorsed by the Florida Medical Association.
Participants will be responsible for participating in a group leadership project. The leadership project will be a vehicle to develop personal leadership and communication skills.

Tuition Fee:

Thanks to a grant from The Physicians Foundation, there is no cost to the participant.

Application Process:

Candidates must be members of the Broward County Medical Association, Dade County Medical Association or Palm Beach County Medical Society and can be self-nominated. 

All sections of the Application form must be completed.

Please submit it by the August 23rd deadline. The PLA Advisory Committee will review all applications and all who apply will be notified if they were or were not selected by September 20th.

Schedule 2019 - 2020

Session 1: Retreat “Understanding Your Leadership Style & Relationship Building”
Date/Time: Saturday October 26th - Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon, program ends at 5:00pm.
Cocktail Reception 5:00pm. (The 2019-2020 PLA class, PLA alumni, and PLA Advisory Committee.)


Session 2: Advocacy Skills Workshop “State and National Perspectives on Health Care“

Date/Time: Saturday, November 23rd 2019- 9:00am to 4:00pm – Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon


Session 3: “Media, Communication and Collaboration in the Medical Environment”
Date/Time: Saturday, January 25th 2020 – 9:00am to 4:00pm- Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon


Session 4: “Developing and Promoting Resilience for You and Your Team’s Health”

Date/Time: Saturday, February 29th 2020 - 9:00am to 4:00pm- Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon


Session 5: “Innovation & Emerging Trends - Creating Culturally Competent Effective Teams”
Date/Time: Saturday, March 28th 2020 - 9:00am to 4:00pm- Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon


Session 6: “Ethical Leadership & Team Projects”
Date/Time: Saturday, April 25th 2020- 9:00am to 4:00pm- Breakfast at 8:30am, Lunch at Noon


Session 7: “Leadership Summit & Graduation”
Date/Time: Saturday, May 22nd 2020 - 9am to 2pm- Lunch at 12:00pm –
PLA Participants & Alumni, PLA Advisory Commette, Associations’ Board Officers,
