Miami Medicine Magazine
Something New Something Old
By Antonio Mesa, D.O.
The Dade County Medical Association (DCMA) began publishing a magazine a few decades after being founded in 1903. The DCMA started its first magazine under the original name, The Bulletin, in 1932. It was not until 1973 that the official name of the magazine was changed to Miami Medicine. For most of its existence, this magazine included topics of medical interest to physicians in South Florida. This included articles on infectious diseases, new medications and surgical techniques, and developments in hospital medicine among many other things. In the 1990’s, this changed as specialty societies took on a more prominent role in publishing medical literature but it left a gap in coverage of topics of local interest.
In recognition of this gap, the DCMA is relaunching its magazine, Miami Medicine, as a journal publishing articles of scientific interest to the medical community of South Florida. I have the distinct honor of being appointed as Chief Editor of the Journal by the DCMA Board of Directors. While there will be an emphasis on public health and policy, the magazine will include articles on a wide variety of topics affecting the unique population of the area. The editorial board includes Dr. Stephen E. Vernon, Dr. Pedro J. Tort- Saade, and Dr. Edison Castro.
Miami Medicine will continue to include articles on other topics that might be of interest to its members and will have an online version in addition to the print version. Guest editorials will be accepted for publication from prominent members of the community, including non-physicians, who have interesting or important things to say regarding medical care or public health policy. The magazine will also serve as a forum to help physicians, and the general public, gain a better understanding of the practice of medicine as it evolves in a more decentralized direction than it has over the past 30 years.
Physicians, Residents, Fellows, Medical Students, and others interested in submitting research papers for publication can submit manuscripts and supporting documentation for review by the editorial board below.
